We Made It! Barely!! | Cape Hatteras Photographer

For those of you who followed Hurricane Irene's path o' destruction, you know about Cape Hatteras, and how it was severed from the rest of the Outer Banks on August 28th when the hurricane destroyed a portion of Highway 12 - the one road that accesses the various towns that make up the Outer Banks. For several weeks post-hurricane, no one save emergency personnel were allowed onto Hatteras, and visitors were prohibited until - get this - TWO DAYS before the vacation we planned a year ago. Suffice it to say we had some stressful days of worry, but in the end, we made it... and had a fantastic time! Though the weather forcast predicted rain every single day we were there,  the only real rain we got was during the trips in and out, and for the most part the skies were gorgeous. We spent most of our time doing this: Cape Hatteras Child Photographer 1And when it was cloudy, or when we we'd had enough for the day, a bit of this:

Cape Hatteras Child Photographer 2Now we're back at it, full force, but it sure was nice to get a break. I'll leave you with this image of the most spectacular rainbow I've ever seen, which made its appearance as we were hanging out on the deck one night... a double rainbow that stretched all the way across the horizon and was as bright as the front of a Lucky Charms box. My only regret was that I didn't have the right lens on my camera to capture the whole thing, and didn't have time to get a different one - the rainbow disappeared in just a couple of minutes. We had some great luck on that trip, though, so it seemed only appropriate :D I hope you had a great week, too!Cape Hatteras Child Photographer 3
